From Built-In Desk to Coffee Station: A Kitchen Upgrade

Like many 20-year-old homes, my kitchen came with a built-in desk—a once-popular feature that, over time, became more of a clutter magnet than a functional workspace. Instead of letting it collect mail and random odds and ends, I decided to transform it into something I’d actually use every day: a stylish and functional coffee station!

Step 1: Clearing & Prepping the Space

The first step was decluttering the desk and removing unnecessary items.

Step 2: Choosing the Essentials

A good coffee station needs more than just a coffee maker.  It’s about having everything for your coffee organized and easily at hand. The machines themselves were an investment but many of the other items for my station were easily found on Amazon.

  • A sleek Breville coffee machine with built in bean grinder for my Cappuccinos and Americanos
  • A Nespresso machine with pods for my husband and sons when they want a quick cup of coffee
  • I repurposed my upper cabinets to hold my new cups and saucers and my bottom cabinets hold taller travel coffee mugs and lids

Step 3: Adding Personal Touches

To make the space feel inviting, I incorporated a few decorative and personalized elements:

  • An amazing diffuser from Maison Louis Marie to welcome guests and family as they enter through the side of our home
  • A lamp for ambient lighting
  • Favorite syrups with labels

Step 4: Organizing for Convenience

In my lower drawer I used drawer dividers to neatly store Nespresso coffee pods, tea bags, stirrers, sugar packs, etc.

The Final Look & Daily Routine

Now, instead of a neglected desk, I have a beautiful and functional coffee nook that I use every single morning. It’s my little slice of café heaven, right in my own kitchen!

Would you try repurposing a built-in desk for a coffee station? Let me know in the comments!
